Shopping, Champagne and Chandeliers … oh my!

January 19, 2016

Have you been to the new Restoration Hardware in the city yet? (Technically it’s called RH Chicago, The Gallery at the Three Arts Club).  Judging by the steady flow of people mingling around the place with drinks in hand this past Saturday afternoon I would guess that there are quite a few of you who have!  Did you love it as much as I did?

IMG_4622 (960x1280)

Tip: If you’re planning to dine in this lovely glass-roof atrium, (and I highly recommend you do!) put your name in for a table immediately upon entering. We were quoted a 1 hour 15 minute wait, which ended up being about an hour.  But that’s okay – grab a coffee … or a Bellini (!) at the 3 Arts Cafe counter and start your own tour through this amazing store – all 5 floors of it!

The restaurant and loungey areas are take up most of the first floor. The 2nd floor is set up as a series of to-die-for bedrooms and bathrooms, all decked out in RH’s signature rustic elegance.

IMG_4619 (967x1280)

(I would move into this bedroom/bathroom/sitting room combo tomorrow!)

IMG_4621 (960x1280)

IMG_4620 (1280x941)

IMG_4618 (960x1280)

IMG_4628 (959x1280)

I’m putting this rolling ladder shelf on my Wish List.

IMG_4630

The 3rd floor is Baby, Child and Teen –  they were honestly some of the most fun and creative rooms.

In my fantasy world – this would be my daughter’s room. (I would also need a daughter, ha! I did say this was fantasy.)

IMG_4631 (960x1280)

Who am I kidding – I could live in this room just fine by myself.

IMG_4632 (960x1280)
Love this subtle wall treatment –

IMG_4633 (960x1280)

How about the entrance to this “hang-out” room. Heavy metal chains hung in the doorway. It’s very Brady Bunch meets Keeping up With the Kardashians …

IMG_4634 (960x1280)

Of course, there were some very cool boys rooms too – I love their use of dark colors, leathers and vintage pieces to make these rooms feel cozy but cool.

IMG_4648 (933x1280)

IMG_4641 (1280x1206)

IMG_4635 (960x1280)

Love these bookshelves …

IMG_4637 (930x1280)

And the nurseries … so sweet and perfect for boy or girl. I just love the map wallpaper.

IMG_4649 (960x1280)

And here’s a precious idea to steal – photographs of animal babies hung over the crib:

IMG_4646 (960x1280)

Is it weird that Dan and I stood there for several minutes oooing and aaahing over how cute the baby animals were?

They continued the use of rope in a cool ceiling treatment too –

IMG_4647 (960x1280)

On up to the 4th Floor which was RH Modern and Artwork. Definitely a different vibe –

IMG_4651 (960x1280)

IMG_4652 (1280x960)

This gives new meaning to the word “bar-cart” –

IMG_4653 (960x1280)

Finally up one more flight of stairs – (there’s an elevator too – but you don’t want to miss this staircase)

IMG_4654 (960x1280)

And the view is worth the walk up …

IMG_4656 (953x1280)

A lovely rooftop to showcase their Outdoor Collection – I ‘d love to throw a party up here, wouldn’t you?

IMG_4655 (960x1280)

At this point you hope you’re receiving a text that says your table’s ready.  But if not, just head back down stairs, lounge a little on the comfy sofas and enjoy the view.

IMG_4660 (960x1280)

IMG_4658 (960x1280)

IMG_4663 (802x1280)

(I really want to figure out how to do those uplit wine racks in my house.)

And finally – Voila!

IMG_4665

Such a cozy spot on a cold winter’s day. Are you ready to plan your visit?

A Kitchen, Transformed

January 6, 2016

Hello and Happy  New Year!  The end of 2015 seemed to go by in a whirlwind! I apologize for the lack of posts but I hope to make it up to you now with an incredible Kitchen Makeover that has been in the works all fall.

Of course, everyone loves a good before and after shot so lets start with the before:

IMG_2637

This is the kitchen my clients inherited from the previous owners. It was kind of a confusing mix of modern (cabinets and stainless steel countertops) and traditional – (lighting, window treatments). Ready for the after?

Oak-7 (1280x853)

Honestly, this is my dream kitchen – and I am just so happy for this fun family of 6 (if not a tad envious!) This new kitchen is just so light, bright and cheerful.  The wood island really adds warmth and keeps things from feeling too sterile, which can happen sometimes in all white kitchens.

A few more comparison shots …

IMG_2599

Oak-2 (1280x853)

Behind those antiqued mirrored doors is the refrigerator … with 4 freezer drawers below. We decided to tile the entire inset behind the sink in a gorgeous gray and white tile with just a hint of shimmer.  It eliminates the need for window treatments and keeps the look clean and fresh.

Before … this whole side of the kitchen just had to go.

IMG_2600

In it’s place …

Oak-3 (1280x954)

That is a fun magnetic wall creating a kind of Command Center (every kitchen needs one, right?), below a TV and more antiqued mirror cabinetry.

Before …

IMG_2624

After … wonderful pantry space flanks the oven and a built-in coffee-maker. I can personally attest to the delicious cup of joe produced by this baby … the perfect “crema” or foam atop each cup! And there’s space on top give the space a more personalized look – with a collection of gorgeous Ginger Jars.

Oak-12 (853x1280)

The countertops are the most amazing I’ve ever seen – Iceburg Extra Polished Quartzite, more stain-resistant than marble, and with the most beautiful veining and opaque coloring. It really does look like it was just chiseled from an iceburg.

Before …

IMG_2622

After …

Oak-14 (1280x1014)

And there was also the Butler’s Pantry …

IMG_2636

And now …

Oak-15 (1280x853)

I am just so thrilled with every little detail …

Oak-11 (1280x853)

Oak-40 (1280x853)

Oak-9 (853x1280)

What do you think?  It has been so fun to see this formerly mismatched room transform into the true heart of the home for this wonderful family.  I also had the pleasure of working with Stephanie Frees, owner of Plain & Posh Cabinetry, a true kitchen magician!

On a separate note … with the new year brings ch, ch, changes! Many of you know that my sweet partner Kristy made a big move this fall to Springfield, IL. Accounting-wise, it makes it challenging for us to work as one company, so she is branching out on her own.  I wish her the best of luck in her new business!

10 things to Inspire

October 20, 2015

Whew!  Sorry blog-readers – it’s been awhile!  With the launch of our new website, I had hoped to also become a little more regular with blog posts but you all have kept me busy with so many fun new design projects this fall! I love the energy and inspiration that fall brings to cozy up our houses and tackle those to-do lists that sat waiting during the summer months.

Today I thought I’d share some of my favorite discoveries of late – hopefully they’ll inspire you too!

1.

FullSizeRender (1)

Do you have a fun chalkboard in your house … but want to write more on it than just a grocery list? Valerie McKeehan to the rescue.

FullSizeRender

I just ordered this book on Amazon and I can’t wait to try it out.  It offers step-by-step instructions for all different lettering styles, flourishes and signs.

image

She “claims” that she doesn’t even have good penmanship in real life. Hmmm – hard to believe.  But her secret is sharpening your chalk – just like you would with a pencil! And get this – if you make a mistake, no need to erase the whole thing. Just use a Q-tip to erase the small area you need! I love it!

2.

IMG_4101

I recently stopped into a favorite little store of mine called The Frenchman’s Wife. I hadn’t been in for awhile and this dressing room stopped me in its tracks.  I assumed it was brick painted over with a thick creamy plaster – but no.  The owner explained that each “brick” was actually a hand cut piece of wood attached to the wall and then plastered over. Swoon! When I asked if I could hire him out, she chuckled and said “It was very time intensive.” Darn!

3.

444x_selenite_logs_bp_1

How pretty are these crystal “logs” from Jayson Home + Garden? They are actually made of selenite.

hg147019_alt2

A little bundle in a fireplace that’s not in use would be so glamorous, don’t you think?

4.

IMG_4104

Speaking of fireplaces, I loved this Instagram shot from @lindsay_hill_interiors. So simple with just some vintage books and white pumpkins!

5.

IMG_4102

Love, love, love these sconces and wallpaper by Kelly Wearstler for Circa Lighting.

6.

steelecanvas-canvas-elevated_truck-152-3_Bu.-natural-gray-angle_large

There’s something kind of cute about these canvas storage baskets from Steele Canvas, isn’t there? They come in different sizes and would be great in a mudroom or playroom to corral shoes, sports equipment or toys.

7.

IMG_4103

I can’t wait to get my hands on some swatches of Robert Allen’s new Durable Velvets. So cozy on a great new sofa.

8.

Nest-Fragrances-Pumpkin-Chai-Candle-400x390

My new favorite candle for fall – Nest Fragrances Pumpkin Chai.

Y.U.M.M.Y.

10.

And last but not least, who better to inspire a little creativity than Mr. Walt Disney?

MK_ENTR_7485772515 (853x1280)

There’s nothing like a trip to Disney World to make you feel like a kid again and inspire you to dream big.  Thanks to my parents, sister and two cute nieces for planning a great trip!

Have you checked out World Market lately?

September 9, 2015

This post is for all the Moms out there whose kids have gone back to school! Whether this makes you happy or sad, hopefully it’s given you a little time to yourself.  Maybe you’ve enjoyed walking leisurely though a store, taking time to look at things without interruption, complaining, fighting, groaning or sighing.

Last week I stopped into World Market – I hadn’t been for awhile and I was quite impressed by what I saw …

image

World Market recently opened their first store in New York – right in Manhattan, so perhaps they decided to step up their game with a lot of chic new merchandise for the Grand Opening.

WorldMarket32_Rugs

I’m a big believer in mixing high and low in design – and World Market offers a lot pieces that have a high end look at inexpensive prices. Here are a few of the things that caught my eye during my (peaceful) walk through the store.

IMG_3623 (768x1024)A gorgeous rug that could create a nice starting point to a neutral room. I’d use it with off-white paint and maybe some furniture in ivory Belgian Linen.

IMG_3624 (768x1024)A new twist on a classic chair – I’d love to see this pulled up to a desk or a little office nook in a kitchen.

IMG_3631 (768x1024)My picture doesn’t do this large-scale artwork justice – it’s got a pretty shimmer and texture.

IMG_3636 (768x1024)Kind of a Restoration Hardware knockoff – I’d like to see two of these flanking a large window or fireplace.

IMG_3634 (768x1024)Oh how I love this desk with it’s industrial base and white lacquer top! It’s actually part of their Mix’n Match desk collection … you pick your base and top from these choices:

IMG_3635 (768x1024)Lots of fun possibilities there … and really a nice good sized desk with plenty of room to spread out!

Next up – another pretty rug:

IMG_3637 (768x1024)I love the soft muted colors creating a subtle pattern. I could see this working in a cozy family room, a bedroom or a nursery.

Speaking of rugs …

IMG_3641 (768x1024) IMG_3642 (768x1024)… they have a lot of great jute and seagrass rugs.  I think every house should have at least one natural fiber rug!  That first one reminds me of the Serena and Lily Border Stripe rugs and the second one just looks cozy and pretty with the blue-gray woven in.

IMG_3640 (768x1024)

I really love these patterned poufs. Tuck two under a console and pull them out when you need extra seating or a place to rest your feet.

I also saw some pretty textiles – from table runners, to napkins, placemats and pillows.

IMG_3644 (768x1024)

IMG_3626 (1024x768)

IMG_3643 (761x1024)

Finally for the kitchen …

IMG_3629 (768x1024)

How gorgeous is this dinnerware?

And I just love bringing in a pop of green with these Jadeite pieces – adds a little vintage flair as well.

IMG_3625 (1024x768)

So there you have it! If you’re looking to make a few Back-to-School changes around your house, World Market may just be your winning ticket! Do you have any recent favorites from their store?

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

May 5, 2015

Hello friends! I must apologize that my blogging has been infrequent this spring … it is always a busy time of year and on top of that we plugging away at our new website which means we’ve been booking up our days with photo shoots as well!  Can’t wait to show you some of the beautiful spaces we’ve been working on!

Also – Happy Cinco de Mayo!  If I had my wish – I’d be sitting down to some street tacos and margaritas at Gracias Madre in West Hollywood right about now.  I love a good Mexican restaurant – but I could really get used to one that looks as chic as this one !

I love the bright airy SoCal vibe … that amazing black and white tile, the exposed brick, the rattan chairs, bow truss ceilings, antique lanterns and succulents on the tables.

Next, I’m wondering … are Chicken Coops the New Swing sets?  I seem to be seeing a lot of them lately. Is it the latest in backyard entertainment?

Tiffani Thiessan has one in the back of her cute Los Angeles home. Recently featured in Lonny, you can see the whole place here.

And Chip and Joanna Gaines, of HGTV’s Fixer Upper, have one too.

Confession: I have become slightly obsessed with this show.  The transformations are amazing. A few of my favorite spaces:

We did just get rid of our swing set this past weekend – in it’s place is going a trampoline.  I guess we’ll have to keep getting our eggs from the grocery store.

Have a good week!
