True Blue Art

November 9, 2016

Do you remember when I shared a picture of these vintage blueprints we found at the Randolph Street Market this summer?

img_1419-1280x960

They are blueprints for the iconic Brach’s Candy Factory that stood in Chicago from 1923 to 2014. We bought a book of them and have been trying to decide what to do with them.  Not only are they are a cool piece of history from our great city, once known as the “Candy Capital of the World,” but the deep indigo color is gorgeous.  (A bit of trivia for you: in 2008,  the factory made a cameo in the film The Dark Knight, where it served as Gotham Hospital. Part of the factory was destroyed for a scene where the Joker sets off a large bomb at the hospital.)

I really wanted to use more than one of the prints – since they are each unique to a different floor or part of the factory, and they are big (!) 35×24 – so doing so would require a big wall. (I actually think that 6 or 9 of these hung in a grid pattern would be amazing in the right space – a huge two or three story wall.)  We decided to hang them above our staircase – the biggest blank wall we have! Voila!

img_4052-960x1280

Now, I apologize, as these are extremely difficult to take pictures because they are so reflective. Here is a better angle but you can see our kitchen table and chairs reflected in the bottom one.

img_4450-960x1280

I am so happy with how they turned out!  I wasn’t sure at first how I wanted to frame them. I really didn’t want anything to take away from the prints themselves.  I had seen this pretty brass hardware on Etsy from a shop called Highland Hardware. They are designed to hold together sheets of acrylic. Clean. Simple. Perfect!

I  brought them to my local frame shop, (Boulevard Fine Art) along with the prints, and they had the acrylic cut for me and even assembled it all.

Brass and Navy is always a winning combo in my book!

And here is the view looking up from our kitchen …

I love when artwork has special meaning to a family.  Both Dan and I come from a long-line of Chicagoans and are always fascinated by our city’s great history. Dan’s career in commercial real estate has put him in front of so many of Chicago’s old buildings and together we love driving the neighborhoods and checking them out. Not only that, but we have been going to Randolph Street Market for over 12 years – it’s kind of a tradition for us every year and we try to go at least a couple times each summer to treasure hunt!  These prints are definitely one of our favorite treasures!

If you’d like to do something similar with your own photographs, I suggest checking out Artifact Uprising. They offer a similar float frame and you can upload your own photograph to their site.  Because I was working with original pieces – this option didn’t work for me – but I would definitely consider it for favorite photographs.

What do you think?  What’s your favorite piece of artwork that has special meaning to your family?

5 Girls, A Goat & a Market

August 26, 2013

So if you live in the Chicagoland area, you’ve probably heard of (or been to!) Girl and The Goat, the West Loop dining hot spot on Randolph Street where Chef Stephanie Izard of Bravo’s Top Chef has made quite the name for herself.

And now, much to everyone’s delight, there is also a Little Goat right across the street … an all-day diner where it’s easier to snag a table and easier on the wallet … yet no less delicious!

So what do you do when the Randolph Street Market is in full swing for the weekend right down the street from this Little Goat?

Girls Trip!

Bright and early Saturday morning, 5 Girls and the Goat communed over watermelon cucumber mimosas and the best hashbrowns and grits you’ve ever tasted before heading over to the Market for a little treasure hunting.

The restaurant itself is right out of a design mag …

Gorgeous light fixtures, funky wallpaper and skylights.

And the bakery next door … so charming.

With full bellies, we were off to burn some calories in the most fun way.

As usual, I snapped some pictures of some of my favorite finds …

I love these little vintage glass fishing floats to fill a bowl or vase with soft color.

Or you could do something similar with these strands of beads.

Fun hand-painted signs for a farmhouse kitchen.

We were cracking up over this collection of vintage signs …

How many of our boys could use these reminders …

I think these little lockers would be SO cute flanking the bed in a little boys room as nightstands.

Loved this huge armoire painted a pretty blue-gray …

Of course there were vintage crates everywhere but I liked these for their color.

This lamp with marble base almost came home with me.  I forgot to take a picture of the gorgeous gold lining inside the shade.

I wish I had somewhere to put this dresser! What a fun color and the price was only $375 I think?

I also love how it was styled … stacks of candy-colored books and a little birdcage filled with plants. Perfect!

So, after collecting up all their purchases … and giggling over some “vintage” clothing, the Girls were ready to make the trek back to their car …

(See, I told you we would burn off our breakfast calories!)

Home the 5 Girls went to husbands and kiddos … and to find new homes for their new treasures.

One Girl bought this cute little chalkboard …

Another Girl scored this pretty little shelf for her daughters’ bathroom.

Another Girl picked up these metal numbers …

With a plan to do this …

She feels guilty that the picture of #3 is not hung yet given that #3 is 4 years old … but I assured her that you would all understand and perhaps even empathize with the Third Child Syndrome, right?

She also found this …

I love the idea of tucking a vintage team photo like this into a gallery-style wall of art.

As for this Girl?  I also got a chalkboard …

What else?

Well, I have loved these on Terrain for some time, but not for $158 bucks a pop.

Fortunately I was able to snag one for only  $40 …

There are lots of uses of it … from a planter to a magazine holder …

… to a place to store TP or firewood ….

via Houzz
or repurposed into a light fixture …

I think I’ll find many uses for it in my house.

I also like collecting little number eights since that is our address … I found this cute black and white one that I can tuck in almost anywhere.

And I couldn’t resist a little bag full of those glass fishing floats …

All in all, a successful (and YUMMY!) trip.

Another great thing I love about this market is that often times if you talk to the vendors you will find that they have their own shops elsewhere around the city or even do custom work.  I snagged quite a few cards that I hope will come in useful to me or future clients …

I know these 5 Girls are looking forward to another trip!

 Have a good week!

To Market, to Market

May 29, 2013

So, one of the things I most anticipate about Memorial Day Weekend is always the first Randolph Street Market Festival of the season (it runs the last weekend of each month, May through October).  After bribing the boys with a little city brunch (triple chocolate pancakes anyone?) on Sunday morning … we headed over to Randolph Street. It is just such a fun treasure hunt and you never know what you’ll find.

As usual, I snapped some pictures of a few things that caught my attention.  Although, considering the fact that we spent the previous day (and last several weeks) cleaning out our house for our upcoming garage sale, I was still kind of riding the wave of less-is-more and didn’t make many purchases.

But even the boys are intrigued by the assortment of stuff at certain booths …

Kyle kind of liked this vintage desk, chair AND lamp …

And Braden was kind of curious about the cowhide rugs.

Spelling out your name in these jumbo letters would make for a groovy room or playroom …

I thought this rustic bench would be pretty tucked away in a lushly landscaped yard.

I love how they filled these black metal lockers with white plates … would be awesome along a dining room or kitchen wall to add a little industrial edge.

I swooned over this navy campaign-style chest. (Sadly, so did someone else … it had a SOLD sign on it.)

I’m always drawn to pieces like this with a million little drawers … it’s just an organizational dream … think of all the little things you could keep in here … and LABEL it all too …

This vendor is there every time … and I always find myself wishing I had one of his mirrors. I love the mixture of green, gray and reclaimed wood on this one.

So in another life, when I have a cool urban loft in the city, I am so getting this island for my kitchen.

A table can be made from a manhole cover … who knew?

I almost snapped up a few of these galvanized pots … I think they look so pretty filled with flowers outside …

… and Pottery Barn charges a pretty penny for them.

Love these vintage lockers … great for a mudroom or kids’ room.

With some new knobs, these would be really sweet flanking the bed in a young girl’s room. I would design the whole room around that mint color.

Imagine finding this on the hood of a van!

It reminded me of the spectacular sea urchin from Holly Hunt we saw hanging on the wall of the dining room in the Merchandise Dream Home last year.

I learned today that a friend who was also at the Market that day snatched up a pink one for her daughter’s room … how fun is that?  (And by the way, I guess they are called Juju hats … it is an African headdress.)

Aaahhh … to have a girl’s room to decorate. (Yes, I would go crazy.)  But I did find something super cool for a boy’s room …

Wouldn’t it be great on a big white wall … I’m thinking of a gold, charcoal gray and white color scheme here …

And last but not least … on the way out I saw this cute little chair … kinda perfect as is … but you could also have fun with it by spray painting it a bright color and changing out the fabric.

Finally, we rounded out the long weekend with an indoor BBQ at my parent’s house … (with a little early birthday celebration for me …)

Yep, that cake was delish!

This is why we’ve been married 14 years …

August 29, 2012

… because even after all this time, he’ll go along with my requests to visit my favorite design stores in the city when we head down for a 24 hour anniversary getaway …

(the new … and 4x the size Painted Lady on Grand Ave.! Swoon!)

Artemsia

State Street Salvage (love those chain lamp bases!)

Vintage movie reels turned wine storage?
… and because on a Sunday morning, he’ll walk around Randolph Street Market in the rain with me carrying this big heavy wooden bowl I wanted to buy.

And because he took me out to the restaurant I’ve been trying to get into for 3 years …

(It was worth the wait!)

And because we’ve chatted over our morning coffee … or bottles of wine … more times than I can even calculate …

Sometimes it’s nice to act like the couple we were 14 years ago …

While still appreciating all that 14 years together brings.
