Cozy, chunky, warm …

September 26, 2011

So the Sunday section of the Tribune today had a two-page spread called “Curl up and lie – for fall, your home should say cozy” … full of ideas for giving your home an “autumnal update.”  Of course, things like pumpkins, mums and gourds are the obvious symbols of fall, but, like the article describes, I also like to bring out accessories with a cozy feel, a warm color or a chunky texture. So here are some of my own ideas on how to achieve the look.

In West Elm the other day, I saw these pillows … and they were featured in the Tribune article as well.  If these don’t scream cozy, what does? Pillows are such an easy thing to swap out for different seasons.  These have just enough glam to work well in your master bedroom or to dress up a couple of club chairs.

Checking out some of the cute Halloween stuff in Pottery Barn Kids, I saw these sherpa blankets and I seriously wanted to get one for myself.  This picture doesn’t do it justice, but this would be the perfect thing to wrap around yourself on the sofa to watch some football … or Grey’s Anatomy.  I love the creamy white color.

Want to go a little more exotic? How about this furry throw?  I think this would feel nice on your feet when you first step out of bed on a cold Monday morning …

Burlap always makes me think of apple orchards and pumpkin farms. The rich color on this burlap tablecloth makes it feel kind of elegant.

These blankets look and feel like a great fall sweater, don’t they? And every room can use some stripes.

Talk about chunky textures … how about this lovely mirror that literally brings the outside in.

I love the fall colors on this fabric and it has great texture too.

Soon it will be time to make a fire in the fireplace! These can sit on your hearth to hold some of your firewood.

Even in the winter, I am not a slipper person … so I do like the feel of a nice chunky rug underfoot. This has the look of a thick wool fisherman’s sweater.

Did I mention that I am writing this while sipping on a Starbuck’s Salted Caramel Mocha?  I am hitting my cozy quotient for the day! Hope you are too …

A new addiction … Spoonflower Fabrics

September 6, 2011

I have a new addiction and it’s called Spoonflower Fabrics.

It’s an amazing site where you can actually design and print your own fabrics! Hmmm … I would love to try this out if I ever had a spare minute to sit down and sketch some ideas. But in the meantime, there are many other fabulous independent designers who have uploaded their designs to share.

There are literally so many wonderful prints, it has got me wanting to make all new pillows, window treatments, and bedding in every room of my house. (Dan, if you’re reading, take a deep breath … I’m only kidding … kind of.) I could not possibly even come close to featuring all of my favorites here, but I’ll give you a small sampling.

My favorite designer is Holli Zollinger.

I love the nature-inspired fabrics by Golly Bard.

And there are even some totally out-there designs for wherever your inspiration takes you …

I love that any of the prints can be done on various kinds of fabrics … cotton, cotton sateen, knit, twill, linen cotton canvas, silk crepe de chine, cotton voile or cotton silk. And the prices range from $18/yard to $38 which I think is a great deal.

What do you think? Time for a Spoonflower fix?

My favorite Wallpaper … in a Pillow?

August 8, 2011

Do you remember this post about one of my favorite wallpapers by Katie Ridder?

I spotted this pillow at West Elm the other day ….
hand blocked leaf pillow cover

It’s part of their new fall line of accessories and the lacy metallic leaf pattern is done by hand. Quite an inexpensive way to get your “leaf” fix, if you have one … like me.

A few other new arrivals in their store caught my eye …

I’d like three of these, in a horizontal row or stacked vertically.

portico mirror

Love the texture of these frames and they would be great to lighten up a dark bookshelf …

I think these throws handmade from vintage saris are just beautiful … perfect for tossing across a bench, chair or bed.

Even though West Elm has very modern furniture, I think that many of their things can work seamlessly with almost any style of decor. Be sure to check ’em out.

Have a good week!

Lovely for Less: Home Decorators

May 4, 2011

Do you get Home Decorators catalog in the mail?  If you look really closely, you’ll see that they have quite a few … shall we say … replicas (sounds nicer than knockoffs)… of some pretty high end pieces you may have seen elsewhere. And some of them are pretty spectacular.  See for yourself …

Sundance 1934 Dining Chair $245

Home Decorators Garden Chair $89

Layla Grace’s Somerset Bay Essex Chest $3,461
Home Decorator’s Left Bank Chest $259

Circa Lighting Stacked Ball Glass Table Lamp $1,190

Home Decorators Lafayette Table Lamp $249

Madeline Weinrib’s Mandala Rug Beige and Blue (many, many thousands of dollars)
Home Decorator’s Rosa Area Rug Ivory and Navy $279 for a 5’x8″
Neiman Marcus Arched Mirror $750
Home Decorators Amiel Arched Mirror $239
Restoration Hardware’s Brickmaker’s Coffee Table $1,360
Home Decorator’s Holbrook Coffee Table $329
Circa Lighting Desmond Table Lamp $483
Home Decorators Adonis Table Lamp $129
Aidan Gray Cushion Le Jardin from Layla Grace $225
Home Decorators Louvre Square Cushion $24

Aiden Gray French Pillow from Layla Grace $105

Home Decorators Belle Jardiniere Pillow $34

See …  In some cases, I think I even like the Home Decorators version better.  It’s a great lesson in decorating and something I think we all do in fashion as well.  We see an $800 dollar lamp or a $2000 dress that we love in a magazine. No, of course we’re not going to buy it … but we can be inspired by it to look for something with similar lines, colors, patterns, etc. that is a little more friendly to the pocketbook.

What are some of your favorite “Lovely for Less” pieces?

This is where I want to be this weekend …

April 8, 2011

Well … considering that it might get into the 80’s here this weekend, I will gladly choose to be outside. But if this were like any other rainy April weekend, I would love nothing more than to retreat to this room with a good book, a stack of magazines, my favorite pjs, my laptop and not much else.

It’s aptly named The Hideaway, and it is designed by the super-talented Lauren Leiss of Pure Style Home for the Washington DC Design House.
Everything about this room makes me swoon.
Take these chairs … called The Mad Hatter chairs, they are from Lauren’s new furniture line.  I have been dreaming of a little space like this in front of my large living room window and have always thought it would be great to have a patterned fabric on the backs of the chairs that could be seen from the outside.
The drapery fabric is also from her new line.  Not only do I love the print, but also the name. Hapikat.
(Happy + ikat =Happikat … get it?_
And how about that reading lamp? To. Die. For.
(I am officially on a new mission to find another one just like it.)
Not to mention the quirky yet somehow perfect assemblage of art on the walls.  I am desperately working on something like this for my own home and I will tell you that it is not easy!
Have I ever mentioned how much I love the color green? Well, I do, and I think this room shows how to incorporate the perfect dose of it.  (Another killer lamp.)
I also think a great way of bringing life to a space is with flora and fauna. In this case, she has managed to inject just a wink of humor with those green birds and these llama lamps hanging above the window seat. (The llamas are smiling.)
Speaking of the window seat …
How badly do you want to take a nap there?
And the stacks of old books! I know I’ve mentioned how much I love old books.
I am also a big fan of woven wood blinds like the ones she used here. We have them in our family room and I think they are a great and easy way to add another natural element to a room.
I am also a total sucker for a whole mess of mismatched pillows and this combo is just my cup of tea.
If you want to learn more about Lauren and her resources for designing this room, be sure to check out her blog here.
In the meantime, have a great weekend.  Is a nap on your to-do list?
(Nope. Mine either.)
