Shopping (and sipping) at one of our favorite stores

October 31, 2014

Happy Halloween! Yikes … tomorrow is November! Is it really time to start thing about the holidays? Apparently so!  Kristy and I were invited to attend a little Pre-Holiday soiree at one of our favorite stores, Classic Remix Chicago.  Us and a handful of other bloggers were given the task of  tagging 5 of our favorite items in the store to use or give during the holidays.

That’s Mary, the owner … and her cute pup Charlie.

… and a toast with all of the other fun bloggers we met. Check out some of their creative and fabulous lifestyle blogs: The Kittchen, An Eventful Life, Hunter Style, Cedar and Rush, and Mushroom Stew.

With wine in hand, we set out to peruse the store.

Classic Remix has tons of great gift ideas in their store, and many of the bloggers chose their favorite items to give as holiday gifts.  Kristy and I decided to tag things we would recommend for sprucing up your home for the holidays.

Like this chandelier for instance …

With an influx of holiday guests coming into your home this season, why not swap out an old or boring light fixture in your entry with this glamorous number to greet your visitors?

And every good holiday party deserves and good bar cart, doesn’t it?

What a fun place to showcase your fancy barware and cocktail fixings. In a dining room, living room, study … this could work in various rooms of your home.

Next up … these fluffy Mongolian fur pillows ….

Changing out pillows is such an easy way to give a quick update to a room or piece of furniture.  These pillows are soooo cozy … and in winter white they feel festive for the holidays.

Our next pick wasn’t exactly one “item” but rather this tablescape of glass votives and hurricanes.

What a lovely and elegant way to dress your table for the holidays, right? You can keep it neutral with white flowers like they’ve done or add in some colorful blooms.

Our fifth pick is small and could also be a good little gift idea …

Aren’t these acrylic coasters cute?  Typically you don’t think of coasters as being very glamorous .. but these have a very chic vibe, don’t they?  We thought so!

Of course, we were only supposed to tag five items … but there were certainly many more we could have happily put our little Swoon Tag on.

Many thanks to Classic Remix and Nicole Regan of Cedar and Rush for organizing this fun and unique event.

Even better, Classic Remix is offering Swoon readers a 10% off anything in the store from November 10-16! Wouldn’t you love to knock some things off your gift-buying list BEFORE Thanksgiving?  Just head on down to 24 E. Erie Chicago and mention Swoon!

Enjoy your weekend!

Go a little wild …

September 25, 2012

Animal prints are kind of the wilder cousin of the L.B.D. aren’t they?

Just as every woman needs a great little black dress, you also need that go-to, goes-with-everything animal print something.

Maybe it’s a skirt, a fun pair of shoes,

a classic sheath,

or a big scarf …

… none of these things will ever go out of style and they just seem to inject a little fun into any outfit or wardrobe.

Similarly in our homes, a little animal print seems to work with any color scheme and any type of decor.  From modern …

Like a great pair of shoes, a pair of leopard print pillows can really add a little wow to your look.

Wanting to add a little wow to the trampoline, er, … old sofa in our family room, I decided to get myself a great pair of leopard print pillows.

Of course, I found them at my go-to source for pillows, Etsy … in a wonderful little pillow shop called ArianaBelle.

They are made of a super soft cotton velvet and totally make me swoon.

I decided to pair them with a simple ivory linen pillow (also from her shop) with a great black grosgrain ribbon detail.

On a big sectional I think it’s fun to have a mix of pillows and prints.

Of course, something like this can look nice too.

At least my son thinks so.

Master Bedroom Mini Makeover

August 7, 2012

If you remember my post Dare to Go White from a few weeks ago, you know that I have been daydreaming about all white bedding in my master bedroom for awhile.
Well, I finally took the plunge …
… and I must admit, it makes me swoon.
Remember it before?
And after …
It just feels crisp and fresh and reminds me of staying at some of my favorite hotels.
Sometimes less really is more, don’t you think?
The pillow shams and duvet cover are from Serena and Lily, the Border Frame collection in the Bark color.
The matelasse coverlet is from Pine Cone Hill. I love the subtle texture (that easily hides bumps and wrinkles!) and it’s lightweight feel.

Of course, I couldn’t resist at least one pillow with some color.
This is one of my favorite fabrics from Kelly Wearstler … Bengal Bazaar in Magenta. I priced out ordering a yard of the fabric and having a lumbar pillow made, but even with my designer discount, nothing beats Etsy. I saw a smaller pillow made out of this fabric at a shop called Spark Modern, so I contacted the sellers and asked if they could make a lumbar pillow to my specifications, using the same fabric.  They said it was no problem … and I had my pillow within a couple of weeks … for less than what a yard of the fabric costs! Swoon!
I must also point out here … as I did to my dear husband, that with this “new look” I have reduced the number of “decorative pillows” from 8 to 4! (Seriously, I think that is his favorite part, right honey?)
By changing just one thing, it really feels like a whole new room. (Still need some curtains and a comfy chaise …)
Does your master bedroom need a mini-makeover?  I’d be happy to help!

If you’re not ready for antlers on the wall, perhaps on a pillow?

A novel gift …

January 26, 2012

If you read my post entitled Subway Art, you know how much I love it, especially when it can be made personal.

So I LOVE this idea for a baby gift I found in a great little catalogue called Uncommon Goods.

Birth Announcement Pillows

So cute … and could easily transition from nursery to kid’s room. I would have loved one of these as a new-baby gift, how about you?

(Just before she flies out to LA for the Emmys!) what a wonderful event at the Monogram Design Studio learning Jean’s tips and tricks for setting a beautiful holiday table. (It doesn’t have to be perfect or match … lean into nostalgia with vintage pieces and found treasures from travels and take advantage of faux greens … just to name a few!) Plus the talented chefs at Monogram served up the most delicious snacks using their amazing Five-in-One Wall Oven. I’m excited to set my table for Christmas Eve this year and I may just be using Jean’s idea of tying velvet ribbons to vintage coupe glasses. Oh and the dried orange garland! Do you know the story of how Crate & Barrel began? Do you know the story of how Crate & Barrel began? Newlyweds Gordon and Carol Segal discovered simple white European dinnerware on their honeymoon and decided their hometown friends needed it too. They opened the first Crate & Barrel in Chicago in 1962. So honored to be invited to their 60th Anniversary celebration last night. And let me just say, Crate & Barrel sure knows how to set a table … for 60! Every detail of this evening was beautifully styled in that special C&B way that has made them a favorite place to shop for so many for so long. It was wonderful to hear Gordon speak and the last picture is the lovely cozy view I had for dinner. Quintessential Crate & Barrel. @crateandbarrel #60thanniversarycelebration
