Cozy Corner: Living Room Before & After

March 12, 2019

Welcome back for Part Two of this week’s room reveals! In case you missed Part One, the Master Bedroom, you can read it here. Today it’s all about the Living Room. As in most houses, this corner living room is the first room you see upon walking through my clients’ front door.  When we first met, they explained that it currently held pieces from their previous home, but lacked any style or cozy feeling that made them actually want to use it. Here is where we started …

And now …

In a living room, I  love the idea of using four chairs around a table to create a true conversation area where everyone has their own cozy spot to sit. These chairs are SO comfortable and this shade of blue totally brightens up the room.

On the large back wall, I recommended using a gorgeous, graphic wallpaper as our “art” – in lieu of a large framed piece. This stunning grasscloth is one of my favorites and I was so happy when my clients agreed to go for it.

We painted the rest of the walls in the room a light color to match the background of the wallpaper.

In a smaller room like this one where there really is not a lot of furniture pieces, it’s the little details that really bring it to life. I had so much fun accessorizing this space with just enough things to make it interesting but not cluttered.

I love the leg detail on these chairs …

The most fun little chandelier …

I’m so happy to hear that this family now USES this room! It’s a favorite spot for kids and pets alike and a great place for friends who come over to sit and chat over a glass of wine.

Thanks so much – hope you enjoyed both Before & Afters. Have a great week!

A Divine Downsize

June 4, 2018

I have such a fun remodel to share with you today! My clients decided to downsize from their large family home once their youngest was off to college.  They love to travel and also have a beautiful lake house they spend their summers at. So, for the rest of the year, they knew they could get by with less space and less maintenance, but still wanted to stay in the same community they raised their family in. They found a townhouse in the same town, but it needed a major overhaul.  The fun part – my clients decided this was the perfect opportunity to start from scratch and create something very different from their original traditional-style home.  Sleek, modern … with a touch of mid-century glamour.  As you’ll see below, we had our work cut out for us. First up – the kitchen.

This is the kitchen shortly after they purchased it, looking towards a little eat-in area, seen below. Nothing sleek and modern about it! (Except maybe the chandelier?)

Everything had to go …

Ready for the After?

Quite a change, right? It now feels so fresh, bright, sleek and modern.  My clients came to me knowing they wanted to do all white tile with radiant heat through out the kitchen and the living room. I had never done this before but loved how it opened up our options for wood finishes in the kitchen!  So many people are doing white cabinetry with wood floors but we did the opposite. We picked a pretty textured tile and Cambria quartz for the countertops.

You can see we combined light and dark cabinetry in two custom stains. We went through many versions to find just the right complementary combo. Coming from a large kitchen in their previous house, our clients wanted to make sure they had enough storage here, even though this kitchen would be much smaller.  Stephanie of Plain & Posh Distinctive Cabinetry Designs once again came up with a smart and functional plan that included extending the cabinetry into the breakfast area.  We wanted it to look more like a wall than a wall of cabinetry so we kept things very minimal and carried the cabinetry from floor to ceiling with the crown and trim flush with the cabinets. The light wood stain that shows the natural grain of the wood adds warmth to the space as well as a kind of textural element.

A Saarinen-inspired tulip table in unexpected black ties this area in with the darker colors of the kitchen and adds a touch of mid-century glamour. These acrylic chairs are from Ikea and so comfortable to sit in!

Here is another view of the kitchen’s old layout.  The island in the middle and door on the right that lead to a stairway to the lower level and garage ate up a lot of space in this already tight kitchen.  Plus, the island provided no additional seating. We removed the door and the island and reconfigured the space with a peninsula and 3 counter stools.

You’ll see we also added a wonderful wine and coffee bar in the corner.

Let’s take a closer look at that backsplash … it is a back-painted glass. Perfect for the modern, minimalist look we were going for.

I absolutely love how this dark gray stain shows off the the striation in the wood.

Okay so here is the old view standing in the kitchen looking towards the living room. My clients wanted this to be one open space for entertaining, so this wall came down.

Ready for the new view?

With the door gone and that stairway more open, we added a fun geometric wall paper to the stair well. And the living room? Let’s take a closer look at the before …

And the after …

As you can see, we ripped out the fireplace mantel and surrounding tile and covered the entire thing in a gorgeous stack-stone mosaic tile. It provides gorgeous texture and a touch of shimmer. My clients did not want a TV in this room. I suggested doing four chairs surrounding a round coffee table to make this more of a conversation space with a loungey vibe. These mid-century inspired chairs from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams swivel, so they can turn towards the kitchen area and unite the two seating areas. The wood and glass coffee table is from Wisteria and brings in a sculptural and organic element. The geometric rug from Loloi was the perfect way to ground the space and tie all the colors together.

New built-ins were added in the same custom gray finish as the kitchen cabinetry. Floating shelves and no hardware are in keeping with our minimalist aesthetic.

Now it is one big light and bright space, perfect for entertaining but also a cozy spot for my clients to relax, read the paper or chat after dinner with a cocktail.

At the front of the townhouse is the family room and my client’s home office. This was what it looked like when they moved in.

And now …

Cozy was the theme in this space. Since we did chairs in the living room – this is where we put a sectional – so the family could come in here to stretch out and watch TV. The shag rug from Loloi is so soft underfoot.

The sectional from MGBW is upholstered in a luxurious velvet fabric and the polished stainless steel legs add the modern touch we were looking for.

My clients have traveled the world – and they have collected quite a collection of eclectic art and accessories. I really wanted to keep the walls light and neutral throughout the space so that their pieces could really pop. Below you can see a favorite colorful piece from their travels that we incorporated into the front entry.

As a I mentioned before – this was such a fun project to be a part of as my clients were so open and eager to step out of their comfort zone. What a transformation!

A fresh look at living rooms

January 22, 2013

Let’s face it, the living room often gets a bad rap. It’s “the room no one ever sits in,” “stuffy,”  “formal,” “a waste of space.”  Nowadays, many newly built homes are forgoing a living room altogether to give more space to other, more frequently used rooms.

But what if you have a living room in your house? Most houses do … yet it’s often lowest on the priority list of rooms to decorate. Maybe it’s a mish-mash of furniture that didn’t go anywhere else in the house, or, on the contrary, it’s very pretty and expensive furniture that’s not very comfortable and gives off a “don’t-you-dare-bring-a-glass-of-red-wine-in-here” vibe.

Indeed, we had a living room that was never used … until a few months ago when we finally revamped it and got more seating.  Now, I’m happy to say, we have used it quite a lot and it has become a favorite room in the house.

On this cold long weekend, it was a great place to kick back with a fire, some wine and games … and here’s the best part … WITHOUT the TV!

We typically play games at the kitchen table … which is fine … but there always seems to be the temptation of the TV right there staring at us. It’s either on in the background or gets turned on eventually. How nice it was to sit in a smaller cozy room with just the sound of a crackling fire.

Of course, everyone loves their family rooms … it’s the first place we plunk down money for furniture because we know it will be the most used. But let’s face it, in most family rooms, the furniture is placed, not for conversation, but for TV watching.

What about a room without a TV … where the chairs and sofas face each other!  We have enjoyed retreating to our living room with guests who came for dinner … just to sit and chat a little longer after our meal.  When friends and parents have stopped by our house, we’ve been able to sit down and talk with out the Disney Junior theme songs drowning out our conversation.

I’m actually kinda loving AND using my living room now.

So what can you do to make your living room a place you want to live in?

I’ve got a few tips.

#1. Cozy, not-too-stuffy furniture

Dana Wolter Designs

The room above actually shows both kinds of furniture … that chair on the left … not so comfy … but the two double chaises?  Heavenly!  A perfect place to curl up and kick back.

At first I was set on two more formal high back chairs to sit in front of the large window in my living room. But the more I thought about it, I decided what I really wanted was something big, comfy, tufted and with a slight recline. I just couldn’t picture myself sitting in a high back chair to read a book.

I’ll admit, the Louis XV settee I already had in there tends to fall on the more “pretty” side of the scale, but with a few pillows, it is surprisingly comfortable. Nonetheless, it was all the more reason I wanted my two chairs to be ultra -comfy.

#2 Furniture that faces each other

 Houzz

As I mentioned earlier, a space plan like this invites conversation. Don’t push your furniture up against the walls or too far apart. Keep things close enough that you don’t have to shout across the room.

#3 Bring in a big table

Decorpad.com

It’s a great place to personalize the room with your favorite coffee table books or flowers … but you can also use it as a game table, a place to set down a tray of yummy appetizers or after dinner cocktails. I say, go a big as you have the space for.

#4 Fill it with your favorite things

Anne Coyle & Nate Berkus
Cococozy.com
Go a little wild with artwork and pattern … if you love it, put it in.  Make it a space where you can go and sit among your favorite things.

#5 Don’t forget about lighting

Nothing kills ambiance like harsh overhead lighting.   Make sure you have plenty of lamps or sconces on low wattage bulbs.

Finally, kick back, invite some friends over and let the kids watch whatever they want on TV.

As promised …my living & dining room makeovers

November 29, 2012

Before Thanksgiving I gave you a couple of peeks into my dining and living room … our “fall projects” I suppose you could say.

I thought I’d elaborate a little more on them for you today.

First up, Dining Room.  This is what it looked like before.

Everything was pretty much from our very first condo in the city.   I still loved our sideboard and table from Mig & Tig but I just longed for a more elegant and polished look. The rug is only a couple of years old, so that was going to stay too.

So, with new chairs (I wrote about them here), a new paint job (I wrote about my decision process here) a new top for my sideboard (read all about it here) some new curtains, and a little rearranging, here’s what I have now …

And this was it all set up for Thanksgiving …

I am still wanting to replace the chandelier the builder put in with this one that I have loved forever …

I moved the small hutch I painted with chalk paint last year (read about it’s transformation here) onto this wall and hung some pretty but simple plates I found at Anthropologie  around it.  I still wanted a soft look with out too much pattern or color.

I had struggled to find the right spot in my home for this desk/hutch ever since I painted it, but now I think it’s finally found its home. It’s become a great place to display some of the pretty, smaller pieces that seemed to get lost inside the big sideboard.

I also did a little lamp swap … I switched these lamps with the ones in my bedroom.

Voila!

And I kinda like these on my nightstands …

On to the living room …

Perhaps you remember what it looked like before …

I’ve liked the red … in fact, we’ve had a red room in our last 3 homes … maybe that’s why I was up for a change. Something a little softer and more soothing.

I’ve also struggled with the large wall behind the settee …

I had started out hanging my collection of Sid Dickens Memory Blocks that I’ve accumulated over the years … each one is different and symbolizes different times or occasions in our life. You can read more about them here.

While I love them, they just felt a little sparse on that huge wall. I’ve already got a large piece of art above the fireplace and that large mirror in the dining room so I wanted to find something different.

The other issue was that besides the settee, we had no other seating in there … we always seemed to find other priority items to purchase and I never really found the right chairs.  I wanted something pretty AND comfortable. A place where I might curl up with a magazine while my “men” are watching sports … or a place to relax and chat with friends, a fire and an after-dinner drink.

My solution for the big wall was inspired by these pictures …

Those first three are from Nate Berkus’s Manhattan apartment and the last two are coincidentally, also from a Manhattan apartment designed by Phoebe Howard.

What I love about all of them are the big airy metal shelving units.  They really fill a big space with out feeling too heavy.  Nate Berkus always talks about creating a space that feels collected over time,  and with shelves like these I think you can really elevate objects that are special to you into pieces of art.

So … when I spotted these shelves on one of the design blogs I read, I thought they could be perfect for my living room … and I couldn’t believe where they were from.

Yep … these babies are from Ikea! And at $70 bucks a pop, I could get 2 and fill the entire wall.

And that’s exactly what I did.

(I picked up 4 of the baskets from Ikea as well … I love the texture they bring and the hidden storage, since all of the rest of the shelves are so open.)

SO, while Dan painted, (Benjamin Moore Wolf Gray) I built bookcases … and I LOVE them!  They are very sturdy and the glass shelves make them look much more expensive than they really were.

And now I have just the place to put all of the pretty stuff I collect that makes me happy … you know … antlers, pieces of coral, vintage trophies, my favorite coffee table books … I’m sure this arrangement will change often …( especially after the summer antiques market season!)

Notice the little lamps? How cute are they?  I spotted them in the Ballard Catalog and knew they’d be perfect … especially since the bronze finish is the same as the shelves.

They actually clip on and I just ran the cords down the back of the posts … so you can’t see them at all.  I have them set on a timer, so late every afternoon they come and fill the room with a nice soft glow.

And for the rest of the room?

Anyway, that’s it … new paint, new shelves, a couple chairs and a new lamp … and the room has a totally different look.  It has become just the space I envisioned it to be … the “girls” sat in there and chatted on Thanksgiving Day, the boys and I have sat in there reading “The Sixty Eight Rooms” (the book everyone is reading at school) and I have enjoyed it as a quiet spot to catch up on my latest issue of Traditional Home.

(Ok … so I’m still playing around with the pillows … what do you think? Given my pillow obsession it is always hard for me to commit. )

Do you have a room that just isn’t quite working for you?  Here is proof that you can transform it with just a few changes.

Have a great week!

Happy Thanksgiving (and an apology)

November 21, 2012

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Whether you’re at home or visiting loved ones, I hope it is a special day for you and you are able to take a few moments to give thanks for all the blessings in your life.

We are, believe it or not, hosting our first Thanksgiving in this house. The last time we hosted was when we lived in the city. We are so happy to welcome Dan’s sister and family from St. Louis into town as well as Dan’s parents who live nearby.

I must also apologize for being M.I.A. for the past couple of weeks. This was part of the reason …

Yes, we had a magical time …

As you other moms know … getting everyone packed up for a week’s vacation is no small feat. That combined with wrapping up several client projects and finishing up our own home projects in preparation for Turkey Day left me with little time to blog.

But alas, this week has been a lazy week with kids sleeping in and everyone in pajamas at times that are too embarrassing to mention!

So … with our dining room makeover mostly complete … (I still would like a new chandelier, but that will have to wait. Is it wrong to ask Santa for one?) I wanted to get the table all set a little early to take some photos to share with you.

I gave a little peek of it before we went on vacation and you might remember I had these fun plates whimsically sprinkled on one wall …

Well, much to my dismay … this is what I came downstairs to this morning …

Aargh … how’s that for a magazine worthy shot?

Now I may need to drag the boys into Anthropologie today to get a new plate . The will be THRILLED, I’m sure.

Anyway, despite the missing plate … I was still able to get a few shots …

In that last picture you may notice that the living room looks a little different too …

Here’s a couple of glimpses …

I’ll share more after Thanksgiving!

Enjoy!
