Before & After: The Heart of the Home

February 9, 2018

Ok – so it’s been awhile! I apologize. I know that one blog post every few months does not make for a great blog.  But blogging has definitely changed a whole lot since I  started this in 2011. Let’s face it, the best blogs are the ones where the bloggers make make it their full time job. They blog daily or maybe weekly. They change their furniture, art, rugs, paint colors, even houses (!) monthly, semi-monthly, or annually to create new content for their blogs. While this can be a great gig, it is just not realistic in most people’s lives and certainly not my own. Staging a ‘Mother’s Day Tea’ tablescape that no one will ever use, or decorating for Christmas in October so that I can have holiday blog content up the day after Halloween, is not my priority. Other design firms I follow have dedicated social media staff whose whole job is to write the blog posts and do daily Instagram stories. Hard to compete with that – so I’m not going to try.  I have been fortunate to work on some amazing projects this past year and that means there’s less time for blogging.  Plus, I believe a creating a good blog post takes time. I don’t want to slap something together just to say I got a blog post up.  Instagram (which didn’t even exist when I started this blog – can you believe it?) makes it easy to share inspiration or sneak peaks of projects quickly, without the need for a full blog post.  So I’m thinking this blog will become more of a place to feature full project reveals, before and afters, etc. and more noteworthy things – not the little stuff we all get bombarded with already through email, Instagram and other social media. If you are anything like me, perhaps you too sometimes feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of blogs and Instagram accounts there are to follow and keep up with. What do you think? I’m all for simplifying!

So, having said all that – I DO have a real blog post for you today! I am revealing one of my favorite projects of 2017 – a dramatic makeover of a large kitchen and dining room for wonderful family with great taste and ideas about what they wanted their dream kitchen to be. It was a fun collaboration with Stephanie Frees of Plain & Posh Distinctive Cabinetry Designs.

Want to see where we started?

As you can see, we had a lot of space to work with! Despite the light cabinets and floors, the room still felt dark. The pendants over the island were new. Before my clients knew they were going to do a full renovation, they asked me to help them change out existing light fixtures which were way too small for the space … think little silk shades with tiny crystal drops.

But this kitchen was not working for them. Besides all of the ornate details, the layout and flow of the space meant many things were being underutilized.

On the other side of this range wall is the dining room – which has large windows and is flooded with light. But the only way to get to it was to zigzag through a small dark corner Butler’s pantry, whose entrance, above, is where the light is shining from.

The floors were also a problem. They were very hard to keep clean – with so many thick deep grout lines – and tile that just seemed to hold on to dirt.

This was one of the big questions for this remodel … do we lay wood floors down to match the rest of the house?  Normally this would be a good option, but my clients do not love the existing wood floors and did not want to bring that stain color into this new kitchen. If we were going to do wood floors, it would mean redoing all of the floors on the whole house!

The main entrance to the kitchen from the front hall was through this little hallway with a desk on one side and a pantry door on the other. Not only was this desk space not needed since the family has a large home office space right across the hall, but, as most kitchen desks do, it became a clutter and drop-zone.  And this was the first thing you’d see as you’d walk into the kitchen.

Ok – ok! Are you ready to see the After? Drumroll please ….

Where to begin? We opened up the wall on either side of the Range to create two entrances to the dining room and flood the kitchen with it’s beautiful light. Gorgeous cabinetry designed by Plain & Posh is more streamlined and functional and  includes a deeper island in a custom wood-stain to warm up all the white. But actually … the cabinets are NOT white! They are painted Benjamin Moore’s Classic Gray … this is my go-to color for creating the illusion of light and bright, but with more warmth and depth.  The walls are Benjamin Moore’s White Dove.

The countertops and back wall of the range niche are Silestone Quartz in Pearl Jasmine from their Eternal Collection.  We wanted some veining and movement but not too much, so this was the perfect choice.

We also painted all of the window trim Benjamin Moore’s Kendall Charcoal. Another great way to bring added dimension to an all-white kitchen.

The floors! After deciding against wood floors, we looked at a lot of different stone options. We wanted much larger tiles to look less busy and for less grout lines. And … to get just the right color – not too gray or cold looking, but too not too gold or yellow either. We finally hit the jackpot at Exquisite Surfaces with these beautiful tumbled limestone floors.

Check out this fun coffee station …

Stephanie at Plain & Posh has such a knack for designing functional little details like this.

Here are some great closeups of the gorgeous leather barstools from Made Goods and the capped feet of the island.

Ok -so what about the former desk area?

Before …

And after …

With beverage and wine refrigerators and beautiful glass front cabinetry, it is now so much more useful to the family and a more lovely way to enter the kitchen. The warm wood planks were stained to coordinate with the island and wood beam above the stove niche. I love mixing metals -so this little area was a great place to play with antique brass hardware and accents.

Across from the previous desk was a door to a walk-in pantry with very basic shelving that was hard to keep organized and not very pretty to look at upon entering the kitchen.

The new plan called for breaking through that pantry wall into the former Butler’s Pantry and creating a functional yet lovely walk through pantry that could be accessed from either side of the kitchen.

Wait … back up … did you check out those double doors?  That was one of my favorite last minute design decisions! Why have one plain door when we could do 2 charming doors with fluted glass and fun brass knobs?

So what do you think? I am so in love with this bright airy kitchen and it was so fun to style and accessorize. But wait … there’s more … let’s check out the new adjoining dining room, shall we?

First – here is an old photo of the dining room from when my clients first purchased the house.  They hadn’t done much to it since besides moving in their old dining room furniture.

And now …

We wanted a light and soothing color scheme and the design all started with this gorgeous green-gray grasscloth wallpaper. My clients wanted it to feel elegant but not too fussy or formal. I think we achieved that with the lighter wood tones and the more casual side chairs.

I love the sleek lines of this two-toned sideboard.

And a round mirror is a great way to break up all of the linear features of a dining room.

Also, I love the mix of patterns here between the rug and chairs – the rug is more traditional yet the geometric pattern on the chairs is a fun modern pop.

Here is a closer look at the wallpaper and gorgeous Camille sconces from Circa Lighting.

Custom draperies by Mimsie O’Hara in a pretty sheer fabric with metallic threads running through.

All the sunlight filters in so beautifully!

This is the view from the front entry hall …

And then, the view into the new kitchen …

Well … that was a long post! Thanks for sticking with me! This was such a fun project and I am thrilled that my clients have this new wonderful space to gather. It is truly the heart of their home!

And finally, a great big thank you to Marina Storm of Picture Perfect House for her wonderful photography of this project. She captured everything beautifully!

Introducing our new website and a great Before & After

September 1, 2015

It’s been a long time coming, but Kristy and I are proud to finally unveil our new website! We invite you to click on over to our homepage and check out some new features, such as our Portfolio and Client Testimonials. A big thank you goes out to Kate Baird of Katelyn Brooke Designs for designing our new site, and to Donna Anello of My Ellabelle for the wonderful portfolio photography. We’d also like to thank all of our clients who let us invade their houses with our cameras and fresh flowers!

To kick things off, we’d like to share some before and after pictures from one of our favorite portfolio projects – Livable Luxe.

Our clients moved into a beautiful new house last summer. And while the space and bones of the house were amazing, most of the rooms needed some updating. We started with the powder room and the dining room.

Here is the dining room before:

And the after:

_DSC5644E (784x1024)

Our first priority was to lighten and brighten – removing the heavy draperies, covering the dark gold textured walls with a beautiful Phillip Jeffries wallpaper. We chose a paper from their cozy Intertwined collection called Cool Cashmere.

Instead of one large light fixture we suggested hanging two chandeliers over the long dining table we found at Arhaus. Made of a shimmery gold glass, the fixtures feel light and airy despite their size. Just the glamorous touch we were looking for. We also replaced the small ornate sconces flanking the window with tall dramatic Lucite fixtures.

_DSC5715E (668x1024)

The Host/Hostess chairs are restored antiques, recovered in a woven silk ikat fabric. The tufted side chairs in a grey French Linen were a great find on 1st Dibs. The Pansy Print Duo is from Natural Curiosities – gorgeous up close with hand-applied gold leaf.

The gray dining hutch is from Restoration Hardware and the perfect solution, we think, for this large wall and for displaying all of our client’s lovely china and serving pieces.

Floors throughout the entire home were restained in a darker custom-mixed stain. Our client is still debating whether to put a rug in here – the wallpaper is so textured and cozy that for now we are leaving the floor uncovered.

Next up  is the powder room. Here are the Before pictures …

And the Afters …

Down came the gold damask wallpaper and up went a shimmery silver wallpaper from Etten Galleries by Seabrook.  It gives the illusion of a soothing soft rainfall. The existing (too short) vanity was replaced by this gorgeous curved gray one by Plain & Posh Cabinetry. We topped it with a durable but elegant quartzite.

The tall mirror from Horchow and these Lucite sconces from Circa Lighting tie it all together.

_DSC5616E (621x1024)

We even found cabinet hardware to echo the Lucite in the sconces.

_DSC5623E (1024x767)

Finally, most powder rooms may only be suited for one little chandelier … this one called for two! These dramatic chandeliers are made of clear and smoked glass flower-shaped cylinders that also create a dripping or rainlike effect.

We are excited to keep working with this amazing client on the rest of their home – the kitchen is up next!  We’ll be sure to share!

Hope you enjoy perusing the rest of our new site – we are really excited to get to work this fall on many exciting new projects.  Let us know how we can help you!

Between You and Me …

June 23, 2015

I’m always looking for different kinds of “art” for my home.  I love finding new artists on Etsy, searching for vintage sketches and watercolors, taking favorite scenic photographs from vacations and blowing them up big. And maybe it’s my background as a copywriter in advertising, but I also love signs with good “copy” and typography.

Enter “Between You and Me” – a fun little Etsy shop specializing in handmade wood signs with a variety of sayings, quotes, songs, and biblical verses. Since my birthday was at the end of May, I added a couple of their signs to my birthday wishlist. And look what I unwrapped! (Thanks, honey!)

I love this verse from Ralph Waldo Emerson as a sweet way to say grace before a meal.

They are really solid and well made, with kind of a chippy, vintage look.  Here are a few of my other favorites from their shop …

Which ones inspires you?

As promised …my living & dining room makeovers

November 29, 2012

Before Thanksgiving I gave you a couple of peeks into my dining and living room … our “fall projects” I suppose you could say.

I thought I’d elaborate a little more on them for you today.

First up, Dining Room.  This is what it looked like before.

Everything was pretty much from our very first condo in the city.   I still loved our sideboard and table from Mig & Tig but I just longed for a more elegant and polished look. The rug is only a couple of years old, so that was going to stay too.

So, with new chairs (I wrote about them here), a new paint job (I wrote about my decision process here) a new top for my sideboard (read all about it here) some new curtains, and a little rearranging, here’s what I have now …

And this was it all set up for Thanksgiving …

I am still wanting to replace the chandelier the builder put in with this one that I have loved forever …

I moved the small hutch I painted with chalk paint last year (read about it’s transformation here) onto this wall and hung some pretty but simple plates I found at Anthropologie  around it.  I still wanted a soft look with out too much pattern or color.

I had struggled to find the right spot in my home for this desk/hutch ever since I painted it, but now I think it’s finally found its home. It’s become a great place to display some of the pretty, smaller pieces that seemed to get lost inside the big sideboard.

I also did a little lamp swap … I switched these lamps with the ones in my bedroom.

Voila!

And I kinda like these on my nightstands …

On to the living room …

Perhaps you remember what it looked like before …

I’ve liked the red … in fact, we’ve had a red room in our last 3 homes … maybe that’s why I was up for a change. Something a little softer and more soothing.

I’ve also struggled with the large wall behind the settee …

I had started out hanging my collection of Sid Dickens Memory Blocks that I’ve accumulated over the years … each one is different and symbolizes different times or occasions in our life. You can read more about them here.

While I love them, they just felt a little sparse on that huge wall. I’ve already got a large piece of art above the fireplace and that large mirror in the dining room so I wanted to find something different.

The other issue was that besides the settee, we had no other seating in there … we always seemed to find other priority items to purchase and I never really found the right chairs.  I wanted something pretty AND comfortable. A place where I might curl up with a magazine while my “men” are watching sports … or a place to relax and chat with friends, a fire and an after-dinner drink.

My solution for the big wall was inspired by these pictures …

Those first three are from Nate Berkus’s Manhattan apartment and the last two are coincidentally, also from a Manhattan apartment designed by Phoebe Howard.

What I love about all of them are the big airy metal shelving units.  They really fill a big space with out feeling too heavy.  Nate Berkus always talks about creating a space that feels collected over time,  and with shelves like these I think you can really elevate objects that are special to you into pieces of art.

So … when I spotted these shelves on one of the design blogs I read, I thought they could be perfect for my living room … and I couldn’t believe where they were from.

Yep … these babies are from Ikea! And at $70 bucks a pop, I could get 2 and fill the entire wall.

And that’s exactly what I did.

(I picked up 4 of the baskets from Ikea as well … I love the texture they bring and the hidden storage, since all of the rest of the shelves are so open.)

SO, while Dan painted, (Benjamin Moore Wolf Gray) I built bookcases … and I LOVE them!  They are very sturdy and the glass shelves make them look much more expensive than they really were.

And now I have just the place to put all of the pretty stuff I collect that makes me happy … you know … antlers, pieces of coral, vintage trophies, my favorite coffee table books … I’m sure this arrangement will change often …( especially after the summer antiques market season!)

Notice the little lamps? How cute are they?  I spotted them in the Ballard Catalog and knew they’d be perfect … especially since the bronze finish is the same as the shelves.

They actually clip on and I just ran the cords down the back of the posts … so you can’t see them at all.  I have them set on a timer, so late every afternoon they come and fill the room with a nice soft glow.

And for the rest of the room?

Anyway, that’s it … new paint, new shelves, a couple chairs and a new lamp … and the room has a totally different look.  It has become just the space I envisioned it to be … the “girls” sat in there and chatted on Thanksgiving Day, the boys and I have sat in there reading “The Sixty Eight Rooms” (the book everyone is reading at school) and I have enjoyed it as a quiet spot to catch up on my latest issue of Traditional Home.

(Ok … so I’m still playing around with the pillows … what do you think? Given my pillow obsession it is always hard for me to commit. )

Do you have a room that just isn’t quite working for you?  Here is proof that you can transform it with just a few changes.

Have a great week!

Happy Thanksgiving (and an apology)

November 21, 2012

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Whether you’re at home or visiting loved ones, I hope it is a special day for you and you are able to take a few moments to give thanks for all the blessings in your life.

We are, believe it or not, hosting our first Thanksgiving in this house. The last time we hosted was when we lived in the city. We are so happy to welcome Dan’s sister and family from St. Louis into town as well as Dan’s parents who live nearby.

I must also apologize for being M.I.A. for the past couple of weeks. This was part of the reason …

Yes, we had a magical time …

As you other moms know … getting everyone packed up for a week’s vacation is no small feat. That combined with wrapping up several client projects and finishing up our own home projects in preparation for Turkey Day left me with little time to blog.

But alas, this week has been a lazy week with kids sleeping in and everyone in pajamas at times that are too embarrassing to mention!

So … with our dining room makeover mostly complete … (I still would like a new chandelier, but that will have to wait. Is it wrong to ask Santa for one?) I wanted to get the table all set a little early to take some photos to share with you.

I gave a little peek of it before we went on vacation and you might remember I had these fun plates whimsically sprinkled on one wall …

Well, much to my dismay … this is what I came downstairs to this morning …

Aargh … how’s that for a magazine worthy shot?

Now I may need to drag the boys into Anthropologie today to get a new plate . The will be THRILLED, I’m sure.

Anyway, despite the missing plate … I was still able to get a few shots …

In that last picture you may notice that the living room looks a little different too …

Here’s a couple of glimpses …

I’ll share more after Thanksgiving!

Enjoy!
