Shopping, Champagne and Chandeliers … oh my!

January 19, 2016

Have you been to the new Restoration Hardware in the city yet? (Technically it’s called RH Chicago, The Gallery at the Three Arts Club).  Judging by the steady flow of people mingling around the place with drinks in hand this past Saturday afternoon I would guess that there are quite a few of you who have!  Did you love it as much as I did?

IMG_4622 (960x1280)

Tip: If you’re planning to dine in this lovely glass-roof atrium, (and I highly recommend you do!) put your name in for a table immediately upon entering. We were quoted a 1 hour 15 minute wait, which ended up being about an hour.  But that’s okay – grab a coffee … or a Bellini (!) at the 3 Arts Cafe counter and start your own tour through this amazing store – all 5 floors of it!

The restaurant and loungey areas are take up most of the first floor. The 2nd floor is set up as a series of to-die-for bedrooms and bathrooms, all decked out in RH’s signature rustic elegance.

(I would move into this bedroom/bathroom/sitting room combo tomorrow!)

IMG_4628 (959x1280)

I’m putting this rolling ladder shelf on my Wish List.

IMG_4630

The 3rd floor is Baby, Child and Teen –  they were honestly some of the most fun and creative rooms.

In my fantasy world – this would be my daughter’s room. (I would also need a daughter, ha! I did say this was fantasy.)

IMG_4631 (960x1280)

Who am I kidding – I could live in this room just fine by myself.

IMG_4632 (960x1280)
Love this subtle wall treatment –

IMG_4633 (960x1280)

How about the entrance to this “hang-out” room. Heavy metal chains hung in the doorway. It’s very Brady Bunch meets Keeping up With the Kardashians …

IMG_4634 (960x1280)

Of course, there were some very cool boys rooms too – I love their use of dark colors, leathers and vintage pieces to make these rooms feel cozy but cool.

IMG_4635 (960x1280)

Love these bookshelves …

IMG_4637 (930x1280)

And the nurseries … so sweet and perfect for boy or girl. I just love the map wallpaper.

IMG_4649 (960x1280)

And here’s a precious idea to steal – photographs of animal babies hung over the crib:

IMG_4646 (960x1280)

Is it weird that Dan and I stood there for several minutes oooing and aaahing over how cute the baby animals were?

They continued the use of rope in a cool ceiling treatment too –

IMG_4647 (960x1280)

On up to the 4th Floor which was RH Modern and Artwork. Definitely a different vibe –

IMG_4651 (960x1280)

IMG_4652 (1280x960)

This gives new meaning to the word “bar-cart” –

IMG_4653 (960x1280)

Finally up one more flight of stairs – (there’s an elevator too – but you don’t want to miss this staircase)

IMG_4654 (960x1280)

And the view is worth the walk up …

IMG_4656 (953x1280)

A lovely rooftop to showcase their Outdoor Collection – I ‘d love to throw a party up here, wouldn’t you?

IMG_4655 (960x1280)

At this point you hope you’re receiving a text that says your table’s ready.  But if not, just head back down stairs, lounge a little on the comfy sofas and enjoy the view.

IMG_4660 (960x1280)

IMG_4658 (960x1280)

IMG_4663 (802x1280)

(I really want to figure out how to do those uplit wine racks in my house.)

And finally – Voila!

IMG_4665

Such a cozy spot on a cold winter’s day. Are you ready to plan your visit?

An easy way to update your chandelier …

August 8, 2013

You may remember in my recent post about going to New York City that I spotted many chandeliers using tiny round bulbs instead of the usual decorative bent tip bulbs designed to look like flames.

Since then, I’ve been seeing this swap out more and more …

Currey & Co. Spellbound Chandelier

Arteriors Beck Chandelier

Arteriors Manning Chandelier

Currey & Co. Dennison Lantern
Arteriors Maxim Chandelier

Z Gallerie Eclipse Chandelier

Zinc Door Birdcage Lantern

Even with the more traditional or rustic chandeliers, I like how it gives them a fresh new look.

I decided to try it out on my own dining room chandelier …

I bought these 25-Watt Decorative Globe E12 Candelabra Base Light Bulbs on Amazon.

Voila!

It’s a subtle difference … but I like it! Everyone (or thing) can benefit from  mini-makeover every so often, right? A new pair of shoes, a new shade of lipstick … new lightbulbs?

What do you think … do you have any chandeliers in your home that are in need of an update?

Baseball, Cronuts and Shopping … Oh My!

June 18, 2013

Hello friends!

I’m just back from a whirlwind trip to New York City with hubby.  Saturday was kind of business for him … a client of his invited us to their sky box for a Cubs Mets game …

… and Sunday was kind of business for me, as I was able to visit one of my all time favorite stores … truly a designer’s mecca …

Yay!!!!

But first, a little breakfast at Mercer Kitchen in Soho where we were staying  …

The Mercer Hotel in and of itself is the epitome of urban chic …

I kind of love how the books are grouped in color blocks ….

… and the painted white brick in the lobby.

Ok, so this is completely off-topic, but have any of you heard of a Cronut?

It’s a cross between a Croissant and a Donut, and apparently it is the hottest thing in town.

My mom told me to try to find them after she heard Kelly Ripa and Jerry Seinfeld talking about them last week when he was the cohost on her show. Turns out they are only sold at tiny little bakery that was a couple blocks from our hotel in Soho.

When we walked in to get a couple, the girl behind the counter just laughed.  “Um, I’m sorry but they always sell out within the first 30 minutes we open. And there are people waiting outside at 6 am.”

Dang! Now we really wanted one!

I had to google Cronut to look into this further. Apparently, it is the brainchild of pastry chef Dominique Ansel, named one of the “Top 10 Pastry Chefs in the United States” and is only sold at his namesake bakery in Soho for $5 each, with a 6-cronut limit per person!
Now cronuts are being scalped on Craigslist for up to eight times their original retail price!  And in New York City fashion, they’re available for delivery by scalpers in Manhattan ($20 each), Queens ($30 each), and Brooklyn $40 each).
If you do your own internet search, you’ll come across headlines such as:
How Cronuts Are Driving New York City

Cronut Craze Takes Over Manhattan

‘Cronut’ Craze Creates Black Market for Tasty New Treat

Fine, Let’s Talk About NYC’s Out-Of-Control Cronut Craze

and

New York foodies in grip of ‘Cronut’ craze

There’s Jerry and Andy Cohen toasting with their cronuts, lucky dogs.

Anyway, to be honest, even if I had known, we would never have been in line at 6 am … sleeping in, in a dark luxurious hotel room with no kiddos waking you up (or sleeping in your bed) is far more delicious than any pastry. Um, I think.

(That’s us looking a little bleary-eyed as we walked out into the sunlight!)

Ok … back to the shopping.

Seriously, if I lived anywhere near New York City, I think I could furnish my entire house in this one store.

Six swoon-worthy floors of home décor bliss.

Each floor, an amazing loft-space with goodies as far as the eye can see …

rugs,

pillows,

lighting,

And the most unique and amazing furniture. I LOVED, this extra long table available in many sizes and finishes.

Or this rustic one with these funky red chairs.

Another beauty …

Check out the detail …

An incredible coffee table wrapped in the softest leather …

Gorgeous poufs in block-print fabrics …

And I’m officially adding one of these deep curvy couches to my wishlist:

I loved how they hung these John Derian trays on the wall for fun artwork …

And I seriously want at least one of these cool industrial-meets-farmhouse pendants …

Also love the more glam chandeliers … how about this amazing one?

I noticed that they used these cool round bulbs in almost all of their chandeliers … I really kind of like how it gives a more modern look to a traditional chandelier.

I also loved this HUGE old clock (and so did someone else … it had a SOLD sign on it.)  What a dramatic way to fill a big wall …( and I kind of have a thing for clocks.)

So kiddie-corner to ABC Home is another great little shop called Fishs Eddy.

Walking into this Flatiron spot feels as if you’ve just stumbled upon the best stall at the flea market. Worn-wood shelves support stack upon stack of assorted rainbow-colored dishes, mismatched vintage china, toile teapots and other kitschy kitchenwares.

Quirky or creepy …. hmmmm.

What a great place to stock up on glassware …

These gorgeous milk glass cake stands make me want to bake a bunch of cakes and have a party!

So pretty and colorful …

It’s kind of like a candy shop for people who love their kitchens …

After that we headed back down to Soho … I was thrilled to stumble upon this gorgeous Ochre Lighting store …

I am so in love with Ochre’s chandeliers … I wrote a post about it awhile back (you can read it here) … so I was a little giddy as I stepped inside.

Swoon! I was greet by my favorite …

How killer is it? Seriously …

I would even settle for the smaller version …

Amazing over a dining room table …

And I loved this little back room painted a murky, moody blue …

Lest you think all I did was look at design shops … oh no, no, no. What girl can resist the little boutiques of Soho?

I might have brought home a new dress, some strappy sandals, and a pair of cute summer shorts …

I was especially excited to see this sign on Wooster St.

Have you all shopped their website? I love Piperlime, but I had no idea they had an actual bricks and mortar store.

Turns out, the only one is in NYC … and it is just adorable …

(and so are the clothes)

We commented that for a lazy summer Sunday, the streets of Soho were as crowded and busy as Michigan Ave in the weeks before Christmas!

All too soon, it was time to head back to the airport … but not before one more quick stop.

So while we couldn’t try a Cronut … I can say their French Macaroons are delish!

A perfect little snack for the plane ride home.

Until next time New York …

(Just before she flies out to LA for the Emmys!) what a wonderful event at the Monogram Design Studio learning Jean’s tips and tricks for setting a beautiful holiday table. (It doesn’t have to be perfect or match … lean into nostalgia with vintage pieces and found treasures from travels and take advantage of faux greens … just to name a few!) Plus the talented chefs at Monogram served up the most delicious snacks using their amazing Five-in-One Wall Oven. I’m excited to set my table for Christmas Eve this year and I may just be using Jean’s idea of tying velvet ribbons to vintage coupe glasses. Oh and the dried orange garland! What are your favorite things to add to your Holiday table?

Do you know the story of how Crate & Barrel began? Do you know the story of how Crate & Barrel began? Newlyweds Gordon and Carol Segal discovered simple white European dinnerware on their honeymoon and decided their hometown friends needed it too. They opened the first Crate & Barrel in Chicago in 1962. So honored to be invited to their 60th Anniversary celebration last night. And let me just say, Crate & Barrel sure knows how to set a table … for 60! Every detail of this evening was beautifully styled in that special C&B way that has made them a favorite place to shop for so many for so long.
