Client Files: A Happy Homework Hangout

March 21, 2016

I’m excited to share this latest project with you because it was such a fun one – colorful, laid-back … just a happy, light-filled room that was to serve as a study/hangout room for this family of 6.

A lot of times people wonder where they should begin with designing a room – rug, furniture, paint? I always say, it depends.  If you have your heart set on a certain paint color, rug, painting, wallpaper, fabric, fill-in-the-blank, then it can be worth designing the room around it.

In this case –  the first real design element decision was a shiplap wall painted Gray Owl. On it, I envisioned hanging this large Celestial Map flanked by two library sconces.

Fortunately my clients loved this idea too – so that is where we started from. Where to go from there?  We wanted a comfy sofa, a colorful rug and a coffee table to sit below, across from new built-ins with desks, bookcases and space for a TV.  With soft gray walls and the Navy blue artwork, we still could go any number of ways with the other colors in the room.  I proposed these four options to my clients:

What is your favorite? I’ll let the pictures below reveal what my clients selected – it was my favorite combo too.

W North-1 (853x1280)

W North-3 (1280x853)

W North-6 (1280x853)

We completed the look with a bohemian mix of fun yet durable pillows that can be tossed around, warm leather desk chairs and some vintage books.

W North-11 (853x1280)

W North-7 (1280x853)

W North-14 (853x1280)

My clients have been loving their cozy new space and I’m sure there will be lots of A+ work coming out of this room!

Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams Grand Opening Party

March 16, 2016

IMG_5045

So last Thursday I had the pleasure of attending the Grand Opening party for the new Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams Oakbrook store. The store is gorgeous and let me just say, the people at MGBW really know how to throw a glamorous party!

IMG_5061

I’m not sure whether to talk about the food and drinks or the furniture first … but since this is a design blog, I suppose I should go with the furniture …

IMG_5046

… like this chic looking sectional for instance (the words chic and sectional don’t always go together!) And the gold discs are a great way to fill a large wall. They come in sets of four so you can use as many as you need and play around with your own arrangement.

Beautiful and sleek, this bed and bench combo feels very modern and inviting!

IMG_5048

Lots of amazing textures on display – between, rugs, fabrics, leathers, hides and metallics.

I fell in love with these acrylic arm chairs!

IMG_5069

Lots of pretty little vignettes throughout the store …

IMG_5056

They also have a great selection of lamps and unique accessories …

IMG_5067

IMG_5054

IMG_5055

So this is where we started to get a little distracted from the furniture …

IMG_5071

Yummy signature cocktails (go ahead and steal the recipe!) and the cutest presentation of things to nibble on …

IMG_5049

Shrimp and grits, mac’n’cheese, crab lettuce wraps … just to name a few of the delicious offerings. (There may or may not have been some butterscotch pudding and mini peach cobblers as well.)

IMG_5051

Thank goodness I had these lovely friends to help me out …

IMG_5042

As if that wasn’t enough, we left with goodies bags and boxes of these – IMG_5070

Of course, donuts would not be a very nutritious breakfast to feed our kids the next day, so … well … you know.

(Just before she flies out to LA for the Emmys!) what a wonderful event at the Monogram Design Studio learning Jean’s tips and tricks for setting a beautiful holiday table. (It doesn’t have to be perfect or match … lean into nostalgia with vintage pieces and found treasures from travels and take advantage of faux greens … just to name a few!) Plus the talented chefs at Monogram served up the most delicious snacks using their amazing Five-in-One Wall Oven. I’m excited to set my table for Christmas Eve this year and I may just be using Jean’s idea of tying velvet ribbons to vintage coupe glasses. Oh and the dried orange garland! What are your favorite things to add to your Holiday table?

Do you know the story of how Crate & Barrel began? Do you know the story of how Crate & Barrel began? Newlyweds Gordon and Carol Segal discovered simple white European dinnerware on their honeymoon and decided their hometown friends needed it too. They opened the first Crate & Barrel in Chicago in 1962. So honored to be invited to their 60th Anniversary celebration last night. And let me just say, Crate & Barrel sure knows how to set a table … for 60! Every detail of this evening was beautifully styled in that special C&B way that has made them a favorite place to shop for so many for so long.
